Australian triplet opals consist of three layers - a slice of colourful natural opal that is set between a clear glass, plastic or quartz capping on top and a black backing that is made of a resin or black potch. The top layer is added to protect the opal and make it more durable. Triplet opals are suitable for all types of opal jewellery, however it is important not to submerge them repeatedly in water.
