Black Star Opal offers a contemporary opal gemstone and jewellery shopping experience, bringing the extraordinary colour and beauty of this rare and precious gemstone direct from Australia’s opal mines to customers around the globe. Offering only the highest quality opal products, Black Star Opal makes owning a piece of this stunning gemstone easy and affordable.

Black Star Opal is owned by a family business that has been part of the Australian opal industry since 1968 – first as miners, professional cutters and international exporters based in the world-famous outback mining town of Lightning Ridge, home of the magnificent black opal, then as wholesalers and retailers.

The Australian Opal Centre (AOC) is a vibrant not-for-profit ‘people’s project’, with members and supporters worldwide. The AOC explores and celebrates Australia’s national gemstone through art and scientific research, education, training, and cultural and economic development. It has assembled Australia’s premier public collection of priceless opalised fossils, stunning opal gemstones and history and heritage of Australia’s opal fields.

To house its internationally significant collections, programs and activities, the AOC has commissioned an extraordinary light-filled, two-storey underground building designed by celebrated Australian architects Glenn Murcutt and Wendy Lewin. The building will be a 21st century architectural icon, destination and hub of creativity and enterprise located at Lightning Ridge, NSW.
