Christmas 2026 Opal Jewellery Shopping Guide
By Olivia Deskoski. Updated 14 October 2026.
The tree isn’t up yet, but Christmas is closer than it looks. Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, and if your opal jewellery gift is travelling from our store in Australia to the USA, Canada, the UK or beyond, your real deadline is weeks earlier. For the USA, it’s as early as 7 December for standard shipping. The good news? A little planning now means the perfect opal gift is wrapped and waiting under the tree, with no last-minute panic.
Every year, we help Christmas and end of year gift buyers who are excited, perhaps a little unsure, or running short on time (don't worry, we offer express shipping!). To help get your Christmas planning underway, here is our 2026 shopping and shipping guide, with last send dates, gift ideas at every budget, and simple checks to help you choose opal with confidence.
Christmas 2026 Order Dates
Australia Post has released last send dates for Australian and international Christmas deliveries. See our Christmas 2026 delivery cut-off dates. We recommend ordering at least one day before your country's delivery cut-off date to allow us to pack and ship your package within plenty of time. The sooner we receive your order, the sooner we can ship it to you.
What you can count on from Black Star Opal:
- Fast dispatch. We aim to pack and send orders the same business day. Weekend orders go out on Monday. In the leadup to Christmas, we ship several times per day.
- Free insured shipping worldwide. Standard shipping is free on every order. Express is AUD $10 within Australia and AUD $30 internationally, and it's free on orders over AUD $1,500.
- Our advice: order early, or choose express if you need it sooner. While most deliveries are smooth, postal networks are at their busiest in December, as is customs processing for international orders.
Shopping in person on the Coffs Coast? You can also visit our retail store, The Opal Centre at the Big Banana in Coffs Harbour seven days a week (closed Christmas Day).
Why Opal Rewards The Early Shopper
Shipping times are only half the story. With opal, an early start makes it worth it.
No two opals are the same. Many of our pieces are one of a kind, so the opal jewellery in those photos is the exact one you will receive. It also means that once a unique piece sells, it's gone. So if you've had your eye on something on our site, now is the time to act.
You get time to choose calmly. Opal comes in more colours, patterns and price points than most people expect. A relaxed browse in October or November is far more enjoyable than a panicked one on 1 December, and you're more likely to find the right piece that suits.
Gifting favourites go first. Silver and gold plated silver opal pendants and earrings are classic Christmas gifts, and the widest choice is on offer before the December rush.
Ring resizing takes time. A ring that fits is a gift she'll wear every day. A ring that doesn't fit lives in a drawer. Our gold rings can be resized for AUD $50, but each request is assessed on the ring's design and setting. Ordering early leaves room to get it right before Christmas Day.
Opal Gift Ideas At Every Budget
Genuine Australian opal doesn't have to break the bank. We carry hundreds of pieces under $300, right through to black opal and fine gold jewellery for a once-in-a-lifetime gift. Every piece comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
| Budget (AUD) | What you'll find | A great choice for |
|---|---|---|
| Under $150 | Sterling silver opal pendants, studs and drop earrings, many set with solid or triplet opal | Secret Santa, stocking fillers, a first opal |
| Under $300 | Larger silver and gold plated silver pendants, earrings and rings | Mum, sisters, close friends |
| Under $500 | Solid and doublet opal set in silver, statement pendants, rings and bracelets, smaller gold designs | Your partner, a milestone birthday |
| Under $1000 | Black opal, crystal and white opal set in 9ct and 14ct gold, some with diamonds | Anniversaries, a forever piece, collectors |
We also specialise in premium opal gifts: handcrafted, one-of-a-kind designs in 14ct and 18ct yellow, white or rose gold, set with natural Australian opal and diamonds.
If you're unsure where to start, a pendant or a pair of opal studs can be the safest choice. There's no sizing to worry about, they suit every age and style, and they're easy to wear every day.
Doublets, triplets and solid opal: what's the difference?
You'll see these words throughout our range, so here's the short version.
- Solid opal is one natural piece of opal, cut and polished. It's the most valuable form. Solid opal comes in black, crystal, white and boulder types.
- Doublet opal is a slice of natural Australian opal backed with a dark layer. The backing makes the colour stand out and is an affordable alternative to black opal.
- Triplet opal adds a clear protective dome over the opal slice. It's a lovely, budget-friendly way to wear real opal.
All three contain genuine Australian opal. We always tell you which one you're buying, so there are no surprises when the box is opened. Find out more about Australian opal types.
Finding The Right Opal Jewelry For Her
For your partner. Take a quiet look at the jewellery she already wears. Does she reach for silver or gold? Studs or drops? Match that and you're most of the way there. If you have your heart set on a ring, read our sizing tips below first. An opal pendant in her favourite colours is a popular choice that is always the right size.
For Mum. Mums often love a piece with a story. A pendant or earrings with Australian opal and a Certificate of Authenticity shows real thought. If she likes to dress up, a statement pendant gives her something to show off at Christmas lunch.
For a sister or close friend. Silver opal earrings or a dainty pendant are easy to wear and easy to love. They're also kind to the budget when you have a long list.
For an October baby. Opal is her birthstone, which turns an opal Christmas gift into something personal. One gift, two meanings.
For the woman who has everything. She probably doesn't have a Lightning Ridge black opal. For a true collector, a loose solid opal is a beautiful gift she can later have set into a design of her own.
For yourself. We see you. Treating yourself to a piece of genuine Australian opal is a very good idea, and we won't tell anyone.
How To Buy Opal Jewelry With Confidence
Buying gemstone jewellery online, often from another country, can feel like a leap. Here's how we make it a safe one.
Buy directly from Australian opal specialists. We've been involved in the Australian opal industry since 1969, and have operated our retail store for over 40 years. We select every opal and piece of jewellery, sourcing directly from Australian miners and cutters and working with trusted jewellers we've known for years. We specialise in black opal from Lightning Ridge, where we first began our opal journey, and are members of the Australian Opal Association.
Every piece comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. It confirms that your Australian opal jewellery is genuine. It's a lovely thing to tuck in with the gift, too.
Get the ring size right. If you can borrow a ring she wears on the right finger, a local jeweller can measure it in minutes. Or trace the inside of the ring on paper and consult our ring sizing chart. When in doubt, choose a pendant or earrings, or contact us and we'll talk you through it.
Know our returns policy. Eligible items can be returned within 30 days if they're unworn and in their original box. A 5% restocking fee applies to change-of-mind returns, and custom pieces, resized gold rings and sale items can't be returned for change of mind.
Opal care is simple. Wipe it with a soft, damp cloth and store it separately from harder jewellery. Take doublet and triplet pieces off before showering or swimming, and keep all opal away from perfume, hairspray and household chemicals.

- Insured all the way: every parcel is insured against loss, theft and damage until delivery is confirmed.

Christmas Opal Jewelry Gift FAQs
When should I order opal jewelry for Christmas 2026?
As early as you can. See our Christmas 2026 delivery cut-off dates and order at least one day before your sending date. International orders need the most time. If you're cutting it fine, choose express shipping.
Is opal a good Christmas gift?
Yes. Opal is one of the few gemstones where every stone looks different, so the piece she receives is hers alone. It's also the October birthstone and Australia's national gemstone, which gives it a story worth telling.
How much should I spend on an opal gift?
Whatever feels right for you. Genuine Australian opal jewellery starts under $150, and you'll find a wide choice under $300. Solid black opal and gold pieces sit at the higher end.

Yes. Every piece arrives in a Black Star Opal jewellery box with a Certificate of Authenticity.
What if it's the wrong size or she'd prefer something else?
Eligible items can be returned within 30 days if unworn and in the original packaging. Gold rings can also be resized for AUD $50.
