We love Vivid Sydney!

Vivid Sydney just loves opal, with the opal-inspired light art installation OPALessence (play.with.colour) a highlight of this 18 night festival, which lights up Sydney's harbour foreshore, The Rocks, inner-city and inner-west precincts.

With 1.5 million people expected at Vivid Sydney this year, tens of thousands of people have already streamed past OPALessence (play.with.colour), taking in the 4-metre high bright and colourful opal gemstones and opal macro images projected onto a historic sandstone wall on the corner of 47 George and Playfair Streets in Sydney's Rocks area.

Three of Australia’s leading opal photographers contributed images to OPALessence (play.with.colour) – macrophotography specialist Robert A. Smith; globally renowned opal expert and author Len Cram; and palaeontologist and manager of the Australian Opal Centre Jenni Brammall – all based in Lightning Ridge, NSW, home of Australia’s black opal.

OPALessence (play.with.colour) is the creative concept of Olivia Deskoski, whose family has been part of the Australian opal industry for more than 45 years and runs Black Star Opal, a key sponsor of the installation.

“Vivid has once again proven to be a hugely popular event, with this year’s festival offering an exciting opportunity to promote opal, one of our most beautiful and precious natural assets,” Ms Deskoski said.

“The massive crowds have been warm and receptive towards OPALessence, with children especially loving the light art installation as they run along the wall trying to catch the spinning opals as they move about in different formations and tempos.

“I believe this is the first time this gemstone has ever been showcased on such a large scale, with many of the images projected measuring 4-5 metres tall. The accompanying soundtrack really creates a wonderful, ambient atmosphere in a fantastic location in The Rocks, which is popular with tourists year round.

“Our sponsors are also enjoying the experience, with several choosing to use OPALessence as a platform to engage with clients and stakeholders who love the creative, colourful backdrop of Vivid Sydney. All in all, it has been a marvellous success!”

If you haven't yet seen OPALessence (play.with.colour) head down to the corner of 47 George and Playfair St or visit www.vividopal.com to find out more. Vivid Sydney ends 8 June 2015.
